Student Involvement: Student Advisory Committee (SAC)
Students enjoy dinner together at a sustainability conference in Boulder, CO.

What is a SAC?
The Student Advisory Committee (SAC) is a group of 5-8 Environmental Studies majors who give a voice to and help create a sense of identity among students in the major.

This can range from formally and informally seeking feedback from students about the academic program, or sponsoring bills that request funding for student conferences and events.

In addition, the SAC helps to establish camaraderie among students and faculty through socials, environmental events, lectures, or making classroom visits to courses on the Environmental Studies curriculum. The SAC can also provide feedback for faculty that teach courses on the curriculum and are seeking promotion.

What does involvement in the SAC require?
SAC serves as a bridge between students and ENVST administrations. This role includes, but is not limited to: planning and organizing student socials and events, planning academic brown bag meetings, evaluating the ENVST curriculum and overall program, and planning and organizing the annual student and faculty awards banquet. The SAC is an excellent way to combine academics in a social context while being environmentally active. You do not need to be a member of the SAC in order to participate in SAC sponsored events.

Why Should I Join the SAC?
If you want to have an active role in your education, if you are responsible and seek leadership skills, the SAC may be a perfect match. SAC membership gives students an active position within the Environmental Studies Program and an opportunity to impact the major. Additionally, SAC gives you the opportunity to represent your fellow students.

Can SAC work with my schedule?
The SAC is a vital aspect of the Environmental Studies Program, but it is not time consuming. At the beginning of each semester there will be several weekly, one-hour long meetings. After this, meetings will be held based on the needs of the event being organized.

How do I join?
Joining the SAC is easy. You must be a declared Environmental Studies major in good standing. To apply, simply email the ENVST advisor at envst@envst.utah.edu and request that your name be added to the SAC membership list. You will be required to attend 85% of the meetings, and vote in annual elections for the SAC Chair and Co-chair.

Do I need to be part of the SAC in order to participate in SAC organized events?
NO! The events organized by the SAC are open to all students, faculty and staff regardless of one's affiliation with the Environmental Studies Program. All events are open to the University community.
