Most of the electricity used in Utah and much of the USA is generated from coal which has serious consequences for global climate change, mercury pollution, human health, and biodiversity. Fortunately, individuals can choose for their share of grid electricity to come from wind-generated sources, and the cost of a program run by the University of Utah is trivial - less than 5% above the standard rate, and also tax deductible.

You don't have to be formally associated with a participating department, or even the University of Utah, to donate to this fund. Any individual can use this mechanism, for example to offset their use of electricity or other fossil fuel at home.

Here are some key attributes of the program:
(1) It is extremely cost effective. Because the ASUU made a large scale consolidated purchase, and there is a large economy of scale in building new wind turbines, the price is only $3-/mwh. This compares to $19:50/mwh for the popular Utah Power Blue Sky program. Indeed, I think that we have by far the most cost effective program for individual donations in the nation.
(2) Donations are tax-deductible. This is because the donations are made to the U of U development office and the U retains "ownership" of the offsets. Formally the U can report that they purchased the wind power, whereas we can only say that we gave money for the U to make the purchase.
(3) The program is rigorously accounted. It is certified by green-e, which is considered the gold standard for accounting programs of this type.
